Sunday hike to Puu Huluhulu planned
The Friends of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will hold a “Sunday Walk in the Park” from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.
Led by Cheryl Gansecki, the two-hour, three-mile, fairly flat hike will be to Puu Huluhulu. The trail crosses 1973 and 1974 lava flows, through kipuka, past lava trees and climbs 150 feet to the puu’s summit.
The event is free to Friends members; nonmembers are welcome to join in order to attend. Annual memberships are $30 for individuals; $45 for families.

Area woodturners gather Saturday
The American Association of Woodturners West Hawaii chapter meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the PacRim Tempering Building, 73-4260 Hulikoa Drive, Kailua-Kona. Members and guests of all skill levels are welcome. Bring a chair and lunch.

Fundraiser benefits libraries statewide
The Friends of the Library of Hawaii has partnered with Kraft Foods in Hawaii and Longs Drugs to conduct the “Help Literacy in Hawaii Shine” fundraiser through March 2.
Kraft and Longs Drugs will donate 10 cents per participating Kraft product purchased, up to a maximum of $10,000, to the Friends of the Library of Hawaii.

Youth transition
fair slated Friday
A Big SURF, or Successfully Understanding Resources for Your Future, transition fair is planned from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium.
The fair will introduce young people to available community resources to prepare for the expectations and responsibilities of adulthood, and help provide a bridge between school programs and the opportunities of independent living, community participation, higher education and a career.
Speakers include Patti Hackett-Hunter, Randall Kurohara and Art Souza.
The event includes prizes, free chili and rice, music and live entertainment. Vendors will offer information on topics such as medical care, insurance, legal issues, sexual health and financial readiness.

One Island center announces events
One Island Sustainable Living Center, on Painted Church Road in Honaunau, is hosting the following events in February:
Fourteen wellness practitioners will attend a wellness weekend scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17. The schedule for Feb. 16 includes workshops, food and “wellness practice samplers.” Presentations include yoga, feng shui, acupuncture and astrology.
Lunch is $15. Register online for the 20-minute “practitioner sessions.” These workshops cost $25.
A living foods workshop, the second half of the wellness weekend, begins with a raw foods film night and potluck from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 16.
Fermented and raw food specialist Benjamin Cohn and Jacquelin Sabin will lead a “do-it-yourself raw foods menu and healthy living” workshop Feb. 17. Cohn and Sabin’s presentations will include tips for sprouting, devices and tools, and the nutritional benefits of raw and fermented foods.

Nature yoga classes with Claire Zane are planned from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Feb. 19 and 26 and from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 and 28. These sessions include yoga and breathing practices, combined with a silent nature walk into the One Island medicinal gardens. The suggested donation is $12. ‘Ohana Day’ scheduled at historical park
Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park will hold a closing of the makahiki season celebration called “Ohana Day” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Aiopio fishtrap in the park.
The free event will feature canoe rides, traditional food samples, arts and crafts, games, contemporary kanikapila and fun.

Korean War vets meeting Saturday
Korean War Veterans Association of West Hawaii Chapter 279 meets at 10 a.m. Saturday at Denny’s restaurant, 75-1027 Henry St., Kailua-Kona.
Membership is open to any person who has seen honorable service in the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard if said service was within Korea including territorial waters and airspace at any time Sept. 3, 1945, to present, or said service was outside of Korea from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. Associate members are also welcome.

Makaeo path cleanup planned Saturday
Friends for Fitness hosts a community cleanup of the Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Jogging Path from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Saturday, starting from the entrance by the water fountain. Garden tools and refreshments are provided.
Pua Plantasia scheduled for Saturday
Kona Outdoor Circle will hold its 35th Pua Plantasia Plant Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Old Kona Airport Park’s Makaeo Events Pavilion. More than 20 vendors will offer a selection of plants, including bromeliads, protea, potted flowers, fruit trees, orchids and palms.
A collectibles booth will feature large and small treasures, such as vases and shells.
Classes include an 8:30 a.m. worm composting workshop and a 10 a.m. flower arranging demonstration by landscape designer Scott Seymour. An 11:30 a.m. class is slated with information about growing and preparing tropical edibles.
VFW ladies auxiliary meets Saturday
The VFW Post 12122 Ladies Auxilary will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Kona Elks Lodge. Members and prospective members are welcome to attend.
To become a member, a woman need only be related to a veteran who has served overseas during a time of war or conflict.
